Really Strange Looking Clouds

It looks like something photoshopped but apparently not, a whole new class of clouds created by ripples between different layers of air in the sky. Like the the dust storm in sydney, real weather can be strange enough to look like something out of a movie with modern CGI.

One question I have from the write up:

In hill country from Iowa to the Scottish Highlands…

Where is this Iowan hill country?

  1. Is this the new type of cloud that (I think) was discovered in Iowa this past June? I was in Ames then and the front page of the newspaper talked about a local discovering/noticing the new type of cloud.

  2. I believe so, my reading on the subject mentioned Iowa as one of the initial places it was discovered and that it was the first time a new type of cloud had been discovered in 50 years.

  3. A lot of NE and E central Iowa is pretty hilly. I’ve never heard any of it referred to as “hill country,” though.

  4. I remember visiting “the tallest point in Iowa” when I was a kid. Gorgious part of the state, but to me hill country sounds like something a bit more extreme, alike the Ozarks or, well, Scotland.
